03/03 :: SFA baseball team visit with rehabilitating military Veterans
March 3rd, 2007
Panther Baseball Team Visits Military Veterans
On March 3, 2007, the SFA Varsity Baseball Team took time out of their busy schedule to visit the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation & Extended Care Center, 3900 Loch Raven Boulevard. The center specializes in providing rehabilitation and post acute care for patients in the VA Maryland Health Care System. The center also provides hospice and nursing home care to veterans requiring non-inpatient care. This proved to be a mutually beneficial experience. During the morning, the Panthers visited with veterans of the different branches of military service. They shared stories, expressed gratitude to the veterans for their service in the military, and assisted them with coffee and snacks. VA Staff advised that many of veterans received no or few visitors during the course of their stay at the facility, which could extend to as much as a year or more. Brian Boles, third year coach of the team, stated that "athletics is an extension of the SFA educational experience. It is impossible to think you can learn everything within the four walls of the classroom." This was a great opportunity for the players to give something back with community service and also be able to take something valuable from this experience. After bidding the vets a gracious farewell, the Panthers were off to another rigorous afternoon of practice. |

Panthers Fresh/Soph Basketball Team visited Unseld’s School
The Panthers Fresh/Soph Basketball Team had a memorable and savoring experience when they visited the Unseld’s School on Tuesday, December 19, 2006. The Unseld’s School has been in existence for 28 years delivering a creative learning environment for students in the Baltimore Metropolitan area. The school headed by Connie Unseld, wife of famed NBA, Baltimore Bullets star and Washington Wizards coach, Wes Unseld, enrolls students from pre-k to 8th grade.
Team members read to 1st graders, toured the school, and participated in a group discussion session with 8th graders. At least three of the 8th graders expressed an interest in attending Saint Frances Academy in the fall of 2007. The trip was highlighted by their visit with Wes Unseld, who provided a few basketball and life tips.
Coach Marc Boles stated that “this initiative is part of the team and character building philosophy.” Assistant coaches, Brian Boles, and Marc “Senior” Boles, were also in attendance. |

SFA Sukkah of Peace
Rabbi Gila Ruskin's Junior religion class celebrated the Jewish festival of Sukkot by constructing a sukkah. A sukkah is a harvest hut decorated with symbols of the autumn, with a roof made of branches. Each student wrote a prayer for peace which was posted in the sukkah. Rabbi Ruskin extended an invitation to students and faculty to visit and meditate.

10/04 :: Katrina victim offers gift of thanks to St. Frances Academy

Katrina victim offers gift of thanks to St. Frances Academy
In New Orleans, Noel Russell supported his family by doing what be loved -- creating ink sketches and playing the French horn. In August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated Noel's community in the Lower 9th Ward of his city. Following two days in putrid surroundings, Noel, his wife, and teenage daughter risked their lives by venturing out of their home and through the polluted flood waters in search of sanitary conditions. Several hours later they found shelter at a small airport, but they lost everything -- their house, two cars, their clothes, and Noel's dentures. (He can't play the French horn without his dentures.) Over 13 months later, FEMA reimbursed his family $2,500 and has declined authorization for Noel to receive dental work.
Despite his hardship, Mr. Russell is thankful to the many people who generously supported his family during this most difficult transition. He is especially thankful to St. Frances Academy for accepting his daughter as a student and waiving tuition expenses. (SFA applied to receive a 2005-06 tuition grant from the federal government, but that has also been slow coming.)
On October 4th, Noel Russell presented an ink sketch of SFA founder Mother Mary Lange to SFA director of Advancement Tom Nealis (right). A hopeful Noel shared his intentions: "Making art is what I love to do. I just wanted to give a little love to St. Frances Academy. Everyone here has been so generous to us."
Noel Russell's sketch of Mother Mary Lange prominently hangs in the main office of the high school. |

In 27 World Series games, he amassed 10 homeruns, including five during the 1977 Series (with 4 in 4 consecutive at bats, the last three on first pitches), 24 RBI, and a .357 batting average -- earning him the nickname "Mr. October." |
