Social Studies
United States History This course is a survey of the development of the United States and its people from the Civil War era to the present. Special emphasis is placed on the events that formed the United States following Reconstruction, providing a sense of the multiple cultures that make up the United States. Students will also study the impact of past events on modern times. Significant attention is paid to the study of contemporary issues as they evolve from past experiences. This course also emphasizes skills in research and writing, public speaking and document analysis. World Geography This course focuses on the study of our physical environment and its impact upon history and lifestyles. World regional concepts relating to community, settlement, technology, natural vegetation, landforms, weather and climate are covered in this course. Emphasis is also placed upon fostering an appreciation for world cultures and global awareness. Students will be required to demonstrate the ability to research information and interpret information from maps and graphs. World History This course surveys the history of the world beginning with the roots of democracy in Greece and Italy through the formation of 20th century democracies in the developing world. Areas of study also include European and Muslim empire building, imperialism in Africa, World War II and the Cold War and current events. American Government This course prepares students for their role in a participatory democracy. The class focuses on the structure and processes of democracy, and on the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Using the content of the class, students apply their skills in writing and research, public speaking and document analysis. Students will be responsible for a final Senior Project to demonstrate mastery of the skills and course content. African American History This course focuses on the contributions of African Americans to the American mosaic. Students will explore the history of African Americans from their African origins through the antebellum period, slavery, the Civil War and the Civil Rights Era. Students will examine African American contributions in the political, social, economic, literary and artistic areas. Introduction to Sociology This course is an introduction to the examination of the structure and dynamics of human society. Students will learn to interpret social behavior within the context of modern society and culture. Introduction to Psychology This is an introductory course focusing on scientific study of human and animal behavior, emphasizing the functioning and experiencing organism in its total environment. Consideration is given to such behavioral processes as Motivation, Human Growth and Development, Learning, Intelligence, Personality, Mental Health, Social Psychology, Small Group Behavior, Peer Groups, Leadership, and a study of the theories and theorists of these concepts.
